Two Days at the University of Kentucky, Three Days at TOYOTA

The Fujio Cho Smart Manufacturing Summer Academy is a one-week immersive experience for students in grades 6–8, introducing them to modern manufacturing, engineering technology, robotics, digital production, quality systems, and the Toyota Production System. The program is designed to inspire early interest in engineering and advanced manufacturing careers through hands-on learning and direct industry engagement.

Jointly hosted by the University of Kentucky Department of Engineering Technology and Toyota Motor North America Production Engineering.

Hands-On Industry Experience

Interactive sessions at Toyota's Production Engineering and Manufacturing Center, culminating in a tour of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky.

Mentorship and Exposure

Direct engagement with Toyota engineers, executives, University of Kentucky faculty, and Engineering Technology student mentors.

Future-Focused Learning

Exploration of robotics, automation, quality engineering, Lean problem-solving, and modern production systems.

Program Highlights

Eligible students: 6-8 grade (2026-27 school year)

Cost: $50 per camper

Format: One-week immersive academy

Drop-off & check-in: 9-9:30am / Pick-up: 4:30pm

Learning Model: Hands-on labs, team projects, and industry mentorship

Locations: Three days at Toyota in Georgetown, KY, and two days at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY

Capstone: Student showcase and presentations

FAQ - Current Camp Participants (Parent Guide)

When does camp take place?

2026 Camp runs Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26.

What are the daily drop-off and pick-up times?

Drop-off: 9:00–9:30 AM; Pick-up: 4:00–4:30 PM.

Is there an orientation session?

Yes. A virtual information session will be held on Thursday, June 18 from 6:00–7:00 PM (EST).

Where do I drop off and pick up my student?

Locations change during the week: 

Monday, June 22 – Tuesday, June 23
Center for Robotics and Manufacturing Systems (CRMS)
Drop Off/Pick Up Location: 143 Graham Avenue, Lexington, KY, 40506

Wednesday, June 24 – Friday, June 26

Who is allowed to pick up my student?

Only authorized drivers listed on your camp registration forms.

What paperwork is required?

All waivers and camp forms must be completed by June 15.

What is Onshape?

A cloud-based CAD tool used during camp activities.

What should my student wear?

Closed-toe shoes daily, comfortable clothes, pants required at Toyota (Wed–Fri).

What should my student bring?

Water bottle, medications if needed, and a positive attitude.

Is lunch provided?

Yes, with vegetarian and gluten-free options available.
